Captain Mejia was a survivor from the Battlestar Athena where he served as an Auxiliary Control officer. He served as the third in command on the Taurus until his redeployment on the Bellerophon.

He gets along well with his crewmates and superiors, but does have a short temper at times. Eric drives himself to be the best in all that he does and sometimes take it out on himself when he doesn't 'live up to standards'.

Originally a viper pilot, Mejia transfered to ship command staff after suffering injuries in a war game simulation. His wife divorced him two years before the outbreak of the war.

Background: JR is the fourth child in a family that has pilots going back for generations. He learned to fly at the age of 12. Both his grandparents served as Navy pilots in the First Cylon war, as did both of his parents (toward the end of that war). His grandmother founded the civilian air transport company Colonial Express, providing just-in-time cargo transport of supplies throughout the Colonies. Most of JR’s pilot relatives (including his older siblings) served an initial tour in the Colonial Navy before getting out and flying for Colonial Express, or its passenger branch, Colonial Spaceways.

JR went against family tradition by joining the Colonial Marines as a pilot, instead of the Colonial Navy, and by planning on making the Marines a career instead of a stepping-stone to a civilian position in the family business.
