Battlestar Taurus - CIC
Day 71
0759

"Commander on the deck!" echoed throughout the CIC.

"At ease and carry on." Cmdr. Guynes said as he made his way to the command table. "Good morning, Colonel and SitRep, please."

"Not much has changed since our morning meeting. All civilian ships report nominal." Col. Wilson flipped through a few reports. "Maj. Watkins confirmed that she would like to do combat drills at 1500."

"Very well and note my approval. Dean, would you please get me the current nav charts and our pre-jump ones from yesterday?"

"Yessir." The Colonel said somewhat surprised. After a few moments, he returned with the charts. "As requested sir, here are the charts."

"Thanks, Dean."

Guynes poured over the charts for two minutes as Wilson watched. Finally, Dean's curiosity could not be contained.

"If I might ask, what are you looking for?"

After a few moments, the Commander looked up. "I'm somewhat wondering why we did something...or more to the point, didn't do yesterday."

"Sir?"

Guynes looked around the command table. Satisfied that no one else was in ear-shot, he continued. "Look at our pre-jump location yesterday compared to our current location. Tell me what stands out to you?"

Dean studied the charts and then looked at William, "We didn't use the full extent of our fleets' 'jump legs'. We could have gone farther, but didn't."

"Aye...very strange compared to what we generally do. My question is why?"

"Maybe the Admiral is shaking up our routine to throw the Cylons off?"

"Maybe Dean, but that doesn't fit into what he generally does." Guynes paused, "Something is going on...something is up."

"Any ideas on what?"

"No, none at all Dean. I do have a meeting at 1200 on Intrepid, so while I'm there I'm going to ask..."

Intrepid CIC / Ranger Scout Five
Day 71
0843

Lt. Amanda Bays walked up to the command table from Comms with a stack of messages. "Admiral, you have a few messages."

"Anything I want to read, Lt. Bays?" Jacobs smiled.

"Mainly stuff from Captain Meyer about Captain's Union questions. Here is one from Mr. Greene inquiring about a meeting for later today, if possible."

"Fun. Looks like I'm going to be..." The Admiral paused for a moment as a new craft appeared on the DRADIS. When it registered as Ranger Five, Jacobs let out a sigh of relief. "Good to see that craft back...but he's early."

"That can be good, that can be bad." Maj. Trevors said quietly. "We should know any second now."

After a few moments, Comms officer Ensign Kelli Darva looked up from her panel and at the command table. "Sirs, I've tried to hail the Scout and no response."

The Major raised an eyebrow, "Have you tried the emergency channels?"

"Yes sir...I immediately switched to those channels after the first two hails were unanswered."

The Admiral studied the DRADIS, "He's parallel to the fleet, so that craft is not going to run into anything at this point. Launch the alert squad and send the CAP to investigate. Set condition two throughout the fleet as a precaution."

"Yes sir." Trevors said as he grabbed for the handset.

Thomas stared down at the command table for a few moments and looked at Lt. Bays. "Order the fleet to spool up and stand by for a jump. After we find out what is going on, we're jumping."

"Aye, Admiral." Bays looked over to the Navigation station. "Navigator, spool jump drives and set your clock to T-30 minutes..."

-------------------

LT. JG William "Snake Eyes" Weston's slowly brought the thrusters down to zero on his craft. He summoned all the strength he could to fire other control thrusters to bring the damaged craft to a stop.

As he looked out the broken cockpit window, he could see three vipers and a raptor racing to meet his craft. Blood drops escaped from his mouth and started to float around his helmeted face. I'm going to die in sight of the fleet...

The pilot's left hand clutched the chest section of his suit as he tried to keep air from escaping. Blood that had escaped from the hole floated in the damaged cabin like frozen red rain drops.

Fleet Tug N741A
Day 71
0851

The four person tug was the closest craft to the damaged Ranger. Quickly, her crew maneuvered their ship and brought the non-responsive craft aboard.

Lt. JG Sharon Straight opened the door to the small shuttle deck after it was pressurized. She had a first aid kit in her right hand as she rushed to the damaged ranger scout.

Oh Gods, no one could survive that, she thought as she saw the shattered cockpit glass. Forcibly, Straight got the entry hatch to the craft opened. The pilot's chair was leaned back and she could see the pilot's weak, but labored chest going up and down as he tried to breath.

Sharon then saw a shard of glass sticking out from the suit.

"Barry, get the stretcher out here and tell Intrepid we need a medical team stat!" Sharon looked at the pilot. "We're going to get you out of here...just give us a second or two."

Battlestar Intrepid - Post Jump
Day 71
1141

Dr. Kersh had just exited surgery when he learned that there was a visitor in his office. As he opened the door, he saw who was sitting on his couch.

"It's going to be touch and go for the next 48 to 72 hours, Admiral." Kersh said as he sat at his desk. "Weston lost a lot of blood and suffered some exposure side effects. We did all we could...it's up to him and his body now."

"Any idea how long he'll be out?"

"None. He could wake up in a few hours, a few day...a week."

Jacobs looked at the doctor, "Years...never?"

"Something like that, boss."

"Keep me informed, Steve." The Admiral stood up, "I have a meeting with Commander Guynes shortly, but if anything changes, call me ASAP."

"Yessir."

Battlestar Intrepid - CO's Office
Day 71
1200

Commander Guynes entered the room and looked at the Admiral, "Good afternoon, Tom. Interesting morning."

Jacobs raised an eyebrow, "I guess that is one way to put it. Computer geeks are reviewing the voice recorder, telemetry and logs as we speak from Scout Five. We should have a full picture this afternoon."

"I have a question." William said as he sat down, "Col. Wilson and I were looking at the jump charts from the last few days and we noticed..."

"Noticed that we had not taken 'full-legged' jumps? I wondered when you would notice and ask."

"Well and with all due respect, consider this as me asking."

"Hope, William...a hope that we were not the only survivors." Tom said solemnly. "Maybe the Cylons were playing us as fools. Part of me still thinks we're not alone in all this. After this latest incident, I'm not so sure."

"So, what now? Are we going to continue to look?"

"Yes, but maybe not as hard as I've had the scouts do over the last few days. Ranger Two is due back at 2200." Tom paused for a sip of tea, "After that, I have a series of jumps planned to move us to a system with a 'friendly' environment."

"Omnicron?"

"Yes. We need to do some repairs and there are a few civvie ships having some problems. We'll hide out and do some repairs and then move along."

"Sounds good." Guynes paused, "What's the news on the pilot and Lia?"

"The pilot is in critical and the next two days will be the most important in his life. Dr. Kersh is sending me reports on an hourly basis." Jacobs took off his reading glasses an took a deep breath. "Major Davis was changed to stable, but is still in a coma. I promoted Capt. Trevors to Major and XO yesterday morning, as you know. I'm going over FitReps to see who I can move to command crew."

"What about Lt. Bays?" the commander asked. "Works hard, handles third watch and Aux Con well. Why not bring her into the fold full time?"

"She's up there...just looking over everyone while I'm at it. Maj. Lazwell may have to split time between CIC and pilots as well. How is Jenni?"

"She has a new friend that I don't like and it's name is Morning Sickness."

Tom smiled, "The friend is temporary...take it from someone who had a pregnant wife...on four occasions. This too shall pass."

2200

"Admiral on the deck!" the Marine shouted.

"At ease and carry on." Jacobs stopped at the command table and looked at Lt. Amanda Bays. "SitRep?"

"Still waiting for Scout Two to return. Ensign Langford is due back any second."

"Very well and continue on."

The Admiral watched the DRADIS and waited. Time seemed to drag as he waited for the Ranger Scout to return. He looked at the clock, 2214...maybe he found something? His return window is open until...

A craft appeared in front of the fleet. After five seconds, the DRADIS ID of Ranger Two registered. Finally, the overhead speaker came crackling to life.

'Intrepid Control, this is Ranger Two. Scouting mission came up empty. Repeat, no contacts...'

"Amanda, bring our bird home. Execute planned jumps starting at 2300. Distribute coordinates to the fleet. " Thomas looked across the command table. "If you need anything, I'll be in my quarters."

"Aye, Admiral."

Sundog
Day 71
2230

Joe Heaton listened as the orders came in to jump. He quickly started the process of bringing up the jump drives and the Nav computer. As he waited for the FTLs to fully energize, a young man walked in.

"Hey boss, I heard the FTLs warming up...what's going on?"

"We're jumping, Kid." Heaton said. "What the heck are you doing up anyways?"

"Still on that irrigation problem in dome four." Michael 'Kid' Suh said. "Was using the shop when I heard things spring to life."

"Well, we're jumping in 25 minutes, so finish up what you can. Looks like we've got a series of moves tonight."

"We'll do, Boss!" Suh said. "Do you need me to wake up the Captain?"

Joe stood there for a moment and took a sip of coffee. "Nah...let Dave and the rest of the family sleep through this. Besides, they finally got Teddy to go sack out..."

Intrepid CO's Quarters
0600
Day 72

Major Darren Trevors entered the Admiral's quarters just as Jacobs finished breakfast. "Good morning, sir. I hope the galley did a better job on your eggs. The ones in the Mess Hall left a hell of a lot to be desired."

"Liberal amounts of red pepper sauce is the only way I can stand them. What's the news today, Darren?

"First the news from medical: I regret to report that we lost Ensign Weston at 0251 this morning. Lt. Butler would like to have a small memorial this afternoon."

Tom closed his eyes, "I pray he's resting on the other side. At least he doesn't have to worry about this life. Memorial approved and any status on Weston's Ranger Scout data?"

"Geeks are still trying to rebuild the data portion of the recorder. Voice recorder has rendered only basic info. We do know that the Ensign was found by a group of raiders...general Cylon scout team configuration."

"Tell Computer Sciences to go double-time on the data recorder." Tom let out a sigh, "What else is there?"

"Fleet has been quiet...Rangers haven't found anything and you have a message from a Jackie Kingston on Nimbus."

"Kingston...what does that name sound familiar?"

Trevors smiled, "She's the teacher that is starting the school and the first day of class is tomorrow. Ms. Kingston is inquiring if you will still be able to give a brief speech and visit with the students?"

"Oh yeah, I promised to do that a few weeks ago. As long as all is quiet in the fleet, then I will be there."

"Yes sir..."

Intrepid - PT Room
Day 72
0616

The Naval and Marine recruits ran along the track on the outer portion of the large room. Sgt. David Garcia had decided to push them this morning: they all ran with 50lbs backpacks on and in full combat gear. Although half of the recruits would never serve as marines, he trained them like they were.

Some were becoming winded and tired. Others showed some stress, but kept the pace. There was one recruit that was keeping up with Sgt. Garcia...and almost setting the pace.

Garcia slowed a little and pulled up to the recruit. He talked loud enough for everyone to hear, "Recruit, what the frak are you supposed to be when you get out of basic?"

"Sir, FTL Technician, sir!" she responded.

Garcia then looked back at the rest of the pack, "You recruits...especially those who are supposed to be Marines are letting a naval engineer set the pace and kick your asses?! Suck it up and keep running...four more laps!"

As she continued on a strong pace, Brenda Holliwell smiled. This isn't too rough...lets see if I can make more of a workout.

The Cylon sped up her running pace slightly. Time to see how good of shape Sgt. Garcia is in...just don't over do it, Six.

Intrepid - Port Hanger
Day 72
1701

Specialists Adele Toscanini and Roy Patrick had the assignment of going over the latest Ranger Scout before her next day maiden flight. They worked in a cordoned-off area of the hanger, alone except for a solitary Marine. The test would take eight hours to complete. This was to be the last of the modified Raptor to be reconfigured into a Scout. Starting with Ranger Seven, all scouts would be built on new frames...not pre-existing stock.

"Initiating start up sequence." Adele watched as the electronics came to life. Roy positioned himself sitting on a box where the co-pilot's chair once was. He pressed a button and smiled.

"Zero-G toilet works from the sounds of it. Can't have a pilot soiling themselves in a flight diaper while on deep space operations, now can we?"

"Got to keep the fly babies happy. Technically, you can seat two people in this thing. Maybe we should encourage the brass to put in seat belts on the toilet. While you're there, please check the FTL auxiliary interface...it's behind you."

"Okay...damn this place is cramp!" Roy finally positioned himself to take a look, "Diagnostics just finished and all is good."

"Testing DRADIS Ship ID switch now." Adele watched the display with interest. After a few moments, the test was done. "Ranger Six still holds her old Raptor ID of 1241 and we can switch between both IDs. Check that off the list."

"Checked off, boss."

Nimbus
Day 73
0715

Priest Justin Cooper took a coughed a little as he listened to a young woman. She stopped and looked at the older ‘man’. “My friend, are you okay? You seem a bit under the weather today.”

“I just have a cold. Please continue on. You were talking about your boyfriend and why you think he’s cheating.”

The woman continued to describe why she thought her boyfriend was cheating on her. Cooper kept up the appearance of listening, but his mind was elsewhere.

I hope we leave this planet and soon. All this ‘poor me’ droning by the human cattle is sickening in itself…never mind the radiation field we’re near. Oh, to be on a thicker armored ship! The Admiral knows what make ‘us’ sick…and it will only get worse. If I get lucky, maybe a resurrection ship is near by…

“So, what should I do?” the young lady asked.

One brought his attention back into the conversation, “When do you see him next, my child?”

“Tomorrow…he’s supposedly will come over once he gets off work on the Highlands Dawn.”

The Cylon sat for a moment in deep thought, “It will do you no good if you hold it inside. Confront him…it is the only way you will find peace.”

The woman shook her head, “Then I will pray for strength to confront him. Thank you for your time.”

“Anytime.” Cooper said with a smile. Maybe it is time for me to ‘confront’…

Starliner Nimbus
Day 73
1016

The man stood in the shadows and watched the Admiral from the open doorway. He had worked with Jacobs around a conference table with other fleet leaders. He had sparred verbally with the military leader on more than one occasion.

Patrick Greene allowed a smile to come across his face as Jacobs finished reading a story to the group of kindergartners on the first day of school on the Nimbus.

Here stands the man who has stood face to face against me...the Cylons and who ever else that has stood in his way. Jacobs is not afraid to show his hard side and stand up for what he believes in...

At that moment, Thomas closed the book and stood up. After the teacher said thank you, the group of four to five year-olds echoed her words. After letting the children go to the back of the room to play with the toys for a short break, the Admiral and teacher talked for a moment.

As he went to leave the room, a little girl ran up to Jacobs and wrapped her arms around his leg. Greene could make out the words that the little girl said to the leader of the fleet.

'Thank you for the story, sir.'

Jacobs patted her on the head, said 'you're welcome' and left the classroom. After a few moments, Thomas could see Patrick.

Greene smiled after he realized he had been noticed. ...but it's good to see he hasn't lost his humanity in this sea of insanity.

"Mr. Greene, good to see you up and going! How's that arm of yours?"

"It'll be in the sling for a few weeks, Admiral. I guess you had a classroom speaking engagement as well?"

"Yes...a favorite Caprican fairytale actually. And how about you?"

"Not as fun as yours, but just as important Admiral...Senior Civics lesson on the branches of governments." Patrick verbally paused as the two started to walk down the hallway. "Well, at least the way it was."

"And it can be that way again, Pat. I was planning on dropping by to see how you were doing and to ask a favor."

"Anything, Admiral."

"This fleet needs a government and civilian leadership. I realize we're still grieving our losses...but we have to move forward again."

"Agreed and I have given this some thought. The framework is done...we just need to find a way to restart the process."

As they stopped at a junction in the hall, Jacobs looked at Greene. "Yes, the process must restart and right now and you, the other survivors, the Captain's Union and the people must get the ball rolling. As the Convention Leader, I need you to restart the process. The Cylons blew up the convention...not the will to try and lead a normal life or as normal as it can get at this point."

Patrick struggled to think of what to say. For the last few days, a government was the last thing he was thinking of. He had been attending funerals and grieving for the loss of friends and compatriots. Greene also had questioned himself and if he had the will to carry on.

Jacobs locked eyes with the politician, "Pat, the people and the fleet need this. They need a government just as much as they need my warships and guns."

"Agreed...and I will restart the process." Greene said calmly. "I can still count on your help, Tom?"

"Just call on me...I'll pitch in to get things done."

Battlestar Intrepid - CIC
Day 76
0224

Lt. Amanda Bays flipped through the fleet reports so that Maj. Trevors cold be ready to brief the Admiral in a few hours. As she sipped some coffee, Amanda looked up at the DRADIS in time to see six new contacts appear at the outer limits of detection.

Frak me!, she thought. As the ID of 'Cylon Raiders' appeared, the CIC burst into activity. "Action Station, Action Station...set condition one throughout the ship. This is not a drill..."

Within two minutes, Admiral Jacobs and Major Trevors entered CIC. Amanda glanced up at both of them, "Vipers will be at combat stations in two minutes. Emergency jump coordinates have been sent out to the fleet. ETA to jump twelve minutes."

"Very good, Lieutenant." Jacobs said. "Cylons are sitting and not advancing...their waiting for the main force."

Lt. Kelli Darva had just slipped on her headset. A shocked look came on her face and then she looked over at the command table, "Sir, the ship Belton Moving Company has reported a jump drive failure...he's ordering his people to get off and he needs a place to send them."

Frak, Jacobs thought as he looked at the DRADIS. "Taurus is right next to them...tell the captain to get over there now!"

"Nine minutes to jump." Bay said over the ship intercom.

"Sir, Captain Stewart can have everyone off in six to ten minutes..." Maj. Trevors paused as he looked at the DRADIS. "Cylon raider patrol is on the move!"

"Standby to have vipers intercept." Jacobs said as four new targets appeared. He immediately could tell what they were due to the icon size. "Cylon Baseships...prepare for more raiders. Suppression barrage on my command."

Lt. Darva looked up, "Sir, Captain Stewart on Belton has sent most of his people off...him, the chief engineer and a helmsman are staying aboard and their trying to get the jump drive going."

The Admiral glared, "Tell them to get their asses on a shuttle and get the frak out of there! By the time they're spooled, the Cylons will be all over us...and the odds are two to one against us."

"More like three to three and a half to one when you figure in raiders, Admiral." Trevors said. "Lieutenant, give me direct communications with that ship!"

"And put it over the speaker!" the Admiral added.

After what seemed like an eternity, Captain Edward Stewart answered. "Intrepid...I can get this up and do a short jump and then do a full jump back to the fleet. I'm not leaving my ship here."

"Captain, by the time you do that, the Cylons will be on top of you! Abandon your ship now!" Trevors ordered.

Then, they heard a click over the speaker.

"Belton has severed communications, sir" Lt. Darva said.

"Thirty seconds until raiders are in barrage range, Admiral Four minutes to jump...and Cylon Baseship will be in missile range as well." Lt. Bays reported.

"All guns, standby to fire or my mark" Jacobs said as he looked back at Trevors. "Get that fool back on the line and get him off that ship!"

"Yes sir!"

Battlestar Taurus
Day 76
0233

"Weapons, defensive barrage fire, now!" Commander Guynes said. A moment later, the sounds of defensive guns could be heard throughout the ship. The rounds exploded into the oncoming raiders. The fighters were no match for the exploding rounds that met them.

Before being destroyed, some raiders managed to return fire with ship to ship missiles. Taurus shuttered as three missiles found their marks. Luckily, they were non-nuclear and the old ship's armor withstood the hits.

Col. Wilson hung his handset up, "Raptor 1270 reports seeing two emergency lifesuits coming out a hatch from Belton They're enroute to fish them out."

"Two...where the frak is the third person?" Guynes growled. "Comms, continue hailing that ship."

Wilson looked at the DRADIS, "Cylon raiders are falling back to the baseships. Flak was too heavy for them...they'll be back as soon as they can get some cover from their big ships."

"Our guns can't take everything out at once."

Captain Wu looked over at the Command Table from Tactical, "The Admiral is ordering combat landings...ninety seconds to fleet jump."

The crackled as Raptor 1270 reported in, "Taurus, we have have their helmsman and engineer...no signs of the captain...

As William Guynes went to pick up his handset, he noticed something on the DRADIS.

Belton was breaking ranks and heading for the Cylons.

Belton Moving Co. - Bridge
Day 76
0235

Capt. Edward Stewart flipped a switch and lowered the bridge window blast shield. He watched as some of the fleet started to jump away. He also heard the pleas from Taurus and Intrepid for him to abandon ship.

With the ship on a direct course to the Cylons, Edward let out a sigh of relief. He picked up the handset at the comms station.

"Admiral, thank you for all you have done, but I've had all I take of this life. My family is dead...most of my friends are gone. Those who were left are safely with you."

The Captain paused for a moment and retrieved his wallet. He pulled out the only family picture he had: it was him, his wife and three children. He smiled as a tear ran down his face.

"Admiral, just let me join them in the afterlife."

After a few moments, Edward Stewart heard the voice of Admiral Jacobs. "Gods speed...and best of luck. Intrepid Actual out."

The Captain looked out the window. Before him, he could see the suppression fire coming from the two battlestars. Space was nothing but a glow from the exploding rounds. He looked over at the DRADIS as the last ships jumped away.

Finally, Intrepid jumped away. As the last round sailed past Belton and exploded, Capt. Stewart could see the four baseships and several smaller craft advancing towards him. Calmly, he sat on the floor and pressed the small picture to his chest. Edward smiled...

...then a half a dozen anti-ship missiles slammed into the Belton, shattering it into a thousand pieces of space debris.
