Ranger 4
Day 65
1851

"Voice recorder on. Currently 1851 and no signals at this time. I'll continue to scan for another forty-five minutes and then head back the Lycanthrope. Recorder off."

Kevin Butler leaned back in his chair and sighed. The trips had been long, boring and fruitless. This is becoming nuts. If we don't find something after the next scan, we should call it a day.

He reached into a nearby storage compartment and pulled out an MRE. As he started to open the bag, a tone rang through the cockpit. Quickly, Butler turned the voice recorded on.

"Short-scan contact! I'm waiting for the ID system to tell me what it is." He sat there for what seemed to be an eternity. As the signal disappeared, the computer finally IDed what it was.

Butler's face turned white, "Cylon momentary contact on short scan. Spooling FTL and bugging back to Lycan..."

Another tone rang throughout the small cabin. This time, it was the DRADIS. Butler went to full speed in the tiny scout. "DRADIS contact, one Cylon baseship almost on top of me...jumping in ten.."

Another tone went off and this one far more ominous. "Missiles and it's going to be close! Jumping in six...counter-measures launched...four...three..."

Nimbus - Patrick Greene's Office
Day 65
1900

"So Pat," Anthony Ito smiled as he passed his boss a drink, "we've had a good day."

"Thanks and yes, it has been a good day...but now we start phase two: Getting people who agree with us to run for office. We'll start with the Interim Presidency and the Election Council."

Ito pulled a folder out of his briefcase and then handed it to Greene, "Here is a list of people with sympathetic views. On the sheet stapled to it, those who are not so...sympathetic."

Greene smiled, "So, how long have you had this ready for me?"

"Finalized it today...but it has been done for nearly two weeks." Ito paused for a moment and took a sip of rye, "As you see on the not-so-friendly list that Mr. Ohara and Mr. Rattiford are at the top of the list."

"Ohara, still a pain in my ass and Carl Rattiford can play some good back room maneuvering games."

"And it's hard to find dirt on him. Some say that Rattiford will back Ohara's run for the presidency." Ito paused, "Some say he might be appointed VP after the election."

"Well, if Rattiford is elected as the Interim Pres, he is supposed to stay neutral in the election." Greene smiled, "Sounds like we have our first round against both of them...play it...hard."

"Your wish is my command, boss..."

Lycanthrope

Day 65
1906

(with Silverlantern)

"This is boring." Gwen Wyatt broke the silence in the jumpstar's CIC.

The ship had been here, along with the raptor Ranger Four, to investigate an unknown, yet possibly Colonial signal. So far, it was all just another nebula.

"Patience, you old hag." Merton said, jokingly, and glad for the distraction from the tedium. "Butler has another hour out there. If you're lucky, he'll bring you back a present."

Paula Gold, the Tactical Officer, joined in."It'd be great if he finds another ship.. even just proof that someone else is out here; someone else survived."

"No argument there, Glitter." Pilot Max Solingen commented from his seat. "It's no picnic sitting in this chair; it needs to be replaced."

"That's cuz yer ass is made of steel, sweetcheeks. You've ruined the springs." Wyatt cackled loudly.

Ship's Security officer Harrison hadn't looked away from the overhead display, even though she had enjoyed the friendly banter.

"You're mighty quiet, Corinna." The Co said, as he looked back up at the display. "It's like looking through soup. Hard to see anything."

Gwen Wyatt recalled her early days in the Colonial Forces. "Back in the Big One, we were ordered to enter the - "

"DRADIS!" Harrison shouted, just as Merton was seeing the object on the screen. "Ranger's back early!"

"Is that a good thing or a bad thing?" Solingen was ready for any immediate order.

"We'll find out. Condition One throughout the ship." Merton said for all, then he picked up his handset. "This is Lycanthrope Actual. You're coming in hot, Butler."

[I was scanning when a Cylon signal came up...ten seconds before I jumped, a baseship entered the area. They saw me and fired....another two seconds and I wouldn't have been here.]

"Understood." Merton said calmly, while inside he raged. Frakkin' trap; we should've known. "You're cleared for landing. Then we'll jump."

[Sounds good to me...I've had my excitement for the day. Ranger Four on approach for landing.]

Intrepid - Starboard Hanger Bay
Day 65
1916

The blond-headed woman stepped off the raptor and onto the hanger deck. She looked around and the long, immense area and all the craft parked into the room. Sitting next to her in a suitcase were the only things she had left the Colonies with: Clothes, several bathroom items, a small computer her earTunes player.

"Excuse me?" a somewhat nervous male voice asked, "Are You Brenda Holliwell?"

The Six model turned and looked at the young man. "Yes I am...and you must be Specialist Bently?

"Just call me Adam and welcome to the Intrepid. I understand that you are the new FTL systems engineer?"

"Yes, I'm mainly handling computers and some of the interlocks...but I'm not afraid to swing a wrench." Brenda smiled and lightly laughed, "Well, at least part time for the next six weeks. I'll be doing basic training of a morning."

"Yes, the new 'fast boot camp' program." Adam couldn't help but notice how beautiful Brenda was. "You'll be with the others in training...I'll take you to them."

"That sounds good Adam. So, tell me more about you..." The Cylon couldn't help but notice he had looked at her longingly. Maybe he can help me...with just a little encouragement.

Taurus - Commander's Quarters
Day 65
2004

Jenni Guynes found herself getting drowsy. She had brought some medical reports back to go over. Need to sack out early tonight...

For a moment, she thought she heard something from the other side of the hatch. After a few moments, she went back to reading the reports.

"Hun, bringing home work again?" William smiled.

"After accusing you of it a few times, I decided to give it a try." Jenni rolled her eyes. "I find it overrated."

"Not going to disagree with you on that one." As the commander sat down, there was a knock at the door and then a marine poked his head in.

"Sirs, if you have a moment, can you both come out here, please?"

William raised an eyebrow, "What's up, soldier?"

"This is something you both need to see." the marine replied with no emotion.

Jenni and William both moved off the couch and made their way to the hatch. As they entered the hall, there was a gathering of crewmen...the hall was packed. William finally found himself standing in front of Colonel Wilson and Major Azmos.

"Well, you have me at a loss. What's up?"

Wilson looked at Azmos, "Major, this is your show...you have the floor."

Jenni had made her way up to William when she heard Wilson's words. What's everyone up to?

Azmos looked at the Commander, Jenni and then the rest of the assembled crew. "Well, when we found out that you and the Captain were expecting a child, several of us got together and wanted to do something. After quietly getting various people and in some cases departments together, we came up with something practical." He then looked to the people behind him and smiled, "If y'all will step off to the side, please."

Jenni choked up and tears started to run down her face. For the few times in his life, William Guynes was left speechless. They both approached the gift in astonishment. The wooden crib was stained, had a mattress, pillows and other bedding.

"Oh my Gods, it beautiful!" Jenni said in a state of shock. "You did this for us?"

William looked down into the crib and noticed the blanket. It was Colonial Navy Blue...with a version of the Taurus' ship insignia hand-stitched in the center. "I don't know what to say...other than thank you."

Among those there, everyone was smiling and even a few tears were shed. Finally, Colonel Wilson looked up. "It was the least we could do for you two. By the way, its meant to locked to the floor. You never know when those knot-heads in navigation will decide to make a tight turn."

With that comment, there were several laughs and a couple of slaps to the backs of two ship navigators who were in attendance.

Jenni gave the Colonel a hug before working her way down the line to thank to the others. "I'm glad you guys thought of that feature! Thank you and this is so wonderful. Thank you everyone!"

A tear rolled down from the right eye of Commander Guynes, "Thank you all, so very much. You have no idea what this means to us..."

Nimbus - Fleet Convention
Day 66
0730

Major Lia Davis arrived to the conference room to find marine Capt. Derick Marduex and the senior members of the convention security team in the room. Most everyone was still getting coffee and doughnuts.

"Good morning Colonel." Marduex said. "Ms. Goodland, this is Colonel Lia Davis, Executive Officer of the Intrepid."

The Colonel shook the hand of Ms. Goodland. "And you are Helen Goodland, former CIA and head of convention security."

"One and the same. I've heard a lot of good things about you" Helen smiled.

"You must have been talking to Taurus' crew members. The crew back on my ship must be celebrating the fact I am here for the next few days." Lia laughed. "Seriously, I've heard nothing but good things about you. Admiral Jacobs wanted to tell you that you've done a great job in such a short time."

"Let him know I said thank you." Helen looked around the room at the combination of civilian and military personnel. "Lets grab a seat and go through what will happen today and tomorrow."

Governmental Convention
Day 66
11:57

Patrick Greene stood at the podium in the Great Hall on Nimbus. In many ways, this was a moment he had looked forward to for several weeks. With his position on the Quorum secured and the debates about the form of government done, it was time to take the next step.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the convention, we now come to one of our last and most important duties: The election of an interim president and a council to overview the elections that are set for fifteen days from now. I will go over the ground rules one last time before we vote.”

“The candidate with the most votes will be declared the Interim President. It will be their duty to organize the elections and educate the fleet about the election process. The president will also select two other people to assist in this process and form the election council. The candidates that place second and third will serve as part of Election Council. In total, counting the Interim President, there will be five people on the Election Council.”

“The Interim President will also assist Admiral Jacobs with the civilian portion of the fleet until a president, vice president and Quorum of Twelve are elected. You have heard the speeches of all six candidates for the Interim Presidency. All I ask of you is that you weigh what they have said very carefully before you vote. Remember, our actions today will lead us into the future…a better future, I pray.”

“To insure the election is honest and fair, members of the convention security team, the military and my office will overview the processes of voting, counting, recounting and verifying the election results. You will have one hour to vote via secret ballot. Once you have voted, you are dismissed for the day. We will reconvene tomorrow at noon for the revealing of the results.”

Greene hammered his gavel, “Voting will start as of this moment and conclude in sixty minutes. My the Gods bless the decisions that this convention is about to make.”

'Bout time. What a windbag. Ivan Shirenko, from the old jumpstar Lycanthrope wasn't made for politicing, or whatever it was called. He was a soldier, had been since he was 18. And even now, at 47, and with an honorable discharge from the Colonial Fleet, he was still a soldier, and an XO.

Interim Presidents and Election Councils and verifying ballots didn't much matter to him. What mattered was that his ordeal was almost over.

Merton roped me into this. I hope Lycan is having a better time on their mission, than this hell. Hang in their, Ivan; almost done, then back home.

He stood up, and picked up his briefcase.

"Ivan?" The pretty brunette next to him asked from her seat. 'Aren't you going to review the notes you took of what they said; weigh what they said?"

"All done, Miranda.' he smiled at her, then made his way up front to vote.

He'll do. Ivan thought of the particular candidate. He'll only be for a short time if he gets it, anyway.

Five minutes, later, Ivan was outside the ballroom. and heading for the nearest restaurant. I wonder what's for lunch.

Governmental Convention
Day 66
12:18

Helen Goodland and her staff worked to verify each and every voting member of the convention. Some of the voters stood in line grumbled about the speed of the process while others stood waited for their moment at the front of the line and then a chance to enter a voting booth.

Maj. Lia Davis had marines stationed throughout the room. She didn’t really expect any problems from inside the convention hall. She was even happier that the press was stuck in the upper gallery, observing from a distance…mostly.

Rick and Brad must be having a cow since we didn't allow them inside to broadcast. Lia chuckled for a moment, I have to give them points for attempting to sneak someone in with a wireless mic. Is was cheap entertainment when we searched the old boy…

Helen made her way to where the Colonel was standing, “So far, so good. A lot of people out their still trying to make up their minds.”

“Yeah, and a lot of them are getting lobbied.” Davis noticed Anthony Ito, the assistant to Patrick Greene talking to a small group. “It also appears that the Convention Chairman has his folks out in force.”

“All is fair in love, war and politics.” Helen smirked, “And the last thing the Honorable Gentleman from Picon wants is Carl Rattiford as Interim President. It’ll spoil his fun.”

“Too bad I can’t vote, Helen…I’d love to frak with Pat’s master plan.”

Government Convention
Day 66
1300

Patrick Greene looked down as the last person exited a voting booth. There was no one left at the voting check in table except the workers who were now cleaning up the station. He looked down at his watch and smiled. It was finally over...at least this portion.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, it is now the sixty minute mark and voting is officially concluded. This body will recess for the day and meet tomorrow at noon for the reading of the results and swearing in of the Interim President."

As the chairman gaveled the end of the meeting, he looked across the way and noticed his aid, Anthony Ito. He looked at him for an answer to how the vote went.

All Anthony could to communicate from across the room was to shrug his shoulders and looked somewhat puzzled.

Greene frowned, Frak...when Tony doesn't know it's never good a sign. This is going to be a close one.

Battlestar Taurus
Day 66
1430

Quote:
Rick: So Brad, if the rumors are true, it's going to close vote and Kelly Washburn's ride to the Interim Presidency is in question.

Brad: It's been known that it would be a close race between Washburn and Rattiford. In the end, I think the convention will give the nod to Washburn because he has the right ideas on how to get things done.

Rick: I think Carl Rattiford will win it in the end and when he does, I have something for Patrick Greene to soothe his bruised ego for his man not getting the job. Maybe he can suck on this baby pacifier and cry himself to sleep. Some one else will have to change his filled diaper though.

Brad: Oh Gods...

Colonel Dean Wilson just shook his head as he listened in on the broadcast at the command table, "Cylon must be laughing their bionic asses off at us. Only thing they left us was politicians and reporters. Permission to change the channel?"

"Please do, even the screeching of a hundred banshees would hold more appeal to my ears." Cmdr. Guynes said with a sigh. "You know who I feel sorry for in all of this?"

"Who?"

"Major Davis. She has a ringside seat to the insanity."

Wilson chuckled, "Someone had to stay behind and mind the fleet...Lycanthrope got the lucky job to go signal hunting. I wonder how their fishing trip is panning out?"

"Colonel, to tell you the truth, I'm kind of envious of them...especially if they find some friendlies to bring back."

Battlestar Intrepid
Day 66
1942

"...very well, Lia. It sounds like you and Ms. Goodland have everything under control over there. Enjoy your night on Nimbus, Major. Good night."

Admiral Jacobs hung up the phone just in time to hear a knock at the door. "Come in"

The door slowly opened and a short, petite blond woman approached the desk. It was Lt. Amanda Bays. "Fleet reports, Admiral. I was told by Captain Trevors that you wanted to see me?"

Thomas took the folder from her hand and motioned her to have a seat. "Yes I did. Amanda, you have done a tremendous job and every responsibility you have been given you have handled well."

"Thank you, sir." Bays said with a slight smile.

"With Captain Trevors assuming a new rank and additional duties, I'm going to give some of his old responsibilities to you. Starting tomorrow night, you will be in charge of the ship during the late watch. During combat, you are in charge of AuxCon. We lose the bridge, I know the ship is in good hands."

"Thank you sir and I accept."

After Jacobs started to stand, Bays almost shot out of her seat and saluted. The admiral returned the salute and then held out his hand, "You've proven you can handle the responsibilities. Congratulations, Amanda."

She smiled widely as she shook Jacobs' hand, "Thank you, sir!"

Lycanthrope - en route back to the fleet
Day 66
2104

(With Silon)

Lt. Kevin Butler sat alone in the galley of Lycanthrope. He sipped his coffee slowly and waited for the next time he was sent out to scout. Well, we hoped to find others...all I found was toasters.

He pulled out his his flight book and found the picture of his finance that he was sure was dead. Well you brought me home again...

Merton entered the galley. he'd been practically glued to the jumpstar's CIC, since the mission had begun, and now that the ship was headed back to the fleet, Gwen and Corinna and begged him to go somewhere and relax. Begrudgingly, he had left the CIc and wandered around the ship, having a few light conversations with whomever he had run across.

The galley was empty except for the lieutenent from Taurus. Merton sauntered over. "Hello, El-Tee. How's our coffee?"

"Beats the heck out of anything on Taurus, that's for sure." Butler smiled, "By this time tomorrow, we should be back with the fleet. Just wish we had found someone."

Merton nodded. "I'd rather find no one, than find cylons. Frakkin' toasters. All this way for nothing. Waste of tyllium.

"Not going to disagree with you there. In some ways though, I have to wonder. We never got to see the other side of that nebula..." Butler paused and just shook his head, "No, more than likely it was a trick."

Merton lowered his coffee cup from his lips. "I've always wondered what we might have found if we had dared scout the colonies. I can't believe that the cylons were 100% effective.

"I've always wonder why we never ran into them...with the exploration mission we were on before the war. They just appeared out of no where."

“Frakkin’ toasters.” Merton said before taking a sip of his coffee. “Wish they’d stayed away. Wish they’d leave us alone now.”

"Same here. Maybe one of these days we can find a way." Butler smiled as he looked at his empty cup, "Where did you find these coffee beans?"

"Traded some things for a supply of 'em. Have another cup. Got something to trade for a bag of beans?

"If you like home-brewed beer, I think we can come to an agreement..."

Nimbus – Government Convention
Day 67
0715

Maj. Lia Davis stood at the podium overlooking the convention room. Today would be the first step towards restoring the civilian government that fell sixty-seven days earlier. For some, this would be a day of joy…for Maj. Davis, she had other emotions.

Lets get this frakking dog and pony show done with. If I had my way, things would stay the way they are until we’re free of the toasters. Let the military do their jobs and the Captain’s Union tend to the civvies.

Additional marines had been allocated for security for this day, at the request of Convention Security Chief Helen Goodland. In her jacket was an envelope with the election results. Only three other people knew the results besides Goodland. They were trusted to keep their mouths shut.

Some people will like the results…others not so much. Today is the day we step forward again, for better or worse.

In her quarters, Convention Participant Kayla Welch looked at three vials. Each one contains a grayish-blue solid substance. The Cylon Three model was supposed to use them sixty-seven days ago, but never suitably got the chance.

Today may finally be her chance.

She sat naked in a chair, looking at the three lubricated vials, an earTunes player and the attached ear buds. Slowly she stood and picked up a vial of high-powered plastic explosives and the tube of lubrication. Kayla closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

Two in one…spot, one placed in the other. The discomfort will be only temporary, just until I can reach the convention room bathroom. Just think about the mission and that all goes well. It’ll be up to ‘Brenda’ from that point, whatever she has planned.

Day 67

“Tony, what’s the word on the street?” Patrick Greene said as he sat at his desk. “Any better idea how the vote went?”

Anthony Ito plopped down in the chair across from his boss. “Three people know the outcome, Colonel Davis, Ms. Goodland and a neutral party.”

“Who was the third person?”

“Captain Jenna Correntti, Secretary of the Captain’s…”

Greene let out a sigh that cut off his chief of staff, “Frak me…talk about your damnable luck. So, any direction picked up after talking to voters after hours?”

“It’s all still in the air and too close to call. I had our folks give up asking when several people started saying they voted for someone not here.”

“Who were the claiming they voted for?”

“President Adar, sir.”

Greene chuckled, “Luckily, he’s nowhere in sight. Did you talk to the others about running for the Quorum?”

Ito smiled broadly, “Yes…and we have friendlies running for all eleven open chairs.”

“Very good, my friend.” Greene stood and looked out the window and directly at Intrepid, “I think we need to get our friends together and have dinner tonight, Tony.”

“Your wish, my command. Consider it done.”
